Colony
project goals
The Avian Sanctuary project was very much a research based project. From the very beginning research began to choose a specific species of bird and work within the constraints and traits that were required for their shelter.
The Purple Martin
Early on in my research I came across a species called the Purple Martin. What stood out to me about this bird was their desire to live in colonies with other Purple Martins. This community aspect became the core of my design.
Inspiration
In my design I wanted to keep in touch with the tradition Purple Martin colony style, while making it my own.
Sketch iteration
As I began to develop the form for my sanctuary it was important to me that the birds would have their community and individual needs met. This includes multiple rooms, wooden construction for insulation, and anti-predator entrances.
early cad exploration
At this point in the process I started to explore details withing the construction of the form, and how they could benefit the birds. One factor that is key for Purple Martins is white homes, because of their dependency on human-built homes, which have been white for decades.
Build Process
Utilizing both poplar and plywood I constructed prototypes and the final Martin Sanctuary.
