Project Constraints

The main constraint of this project was to design a battery powered lamp that was centered around the users interaction. This is mainly focused on the use, but also puts importance on the battery access.

The user

My intended user for this lamp is young children from ages 3 to 12 years old. This lamp is intended to be a night time light that can bring comfort to these young children.

INSPIRATION

For this project I wanted my final product to feel very fun, and make it something people would want to play with and interact with. Because of this I took a lot of inspiration from retro furniture, especially looking towards funky shapes and the color orange.

the Need

This product is designed so children can have a easy to use light to use at night. It can be used both as nightlight and mini lantern. Because of its simple function and adjustable light kids can turn on the light just enough to be able to see in the dark. This can help to provide a great sense of comfort and safety for these young children.

IDeation

Throughout the ideation process I put most of my focus on motion and user interaction. I wanted the activation to be more interesting than merely hitting a button to turn the light on. I wanted the user to be interested in the product and excited to play with and use it.

preliminary model making

At this stage I was working to try out some of the forms I was iterating on. I wanted to see the physical size of them, and how the motion works

CaD Iteration

This model went through many stages of modeling before reaching the final design. The internal structure was the most difficult of process.

3D Printed prototypes

Each iteration focused on the storage of the battery, dimmer switch and LED strip.
